Holly Humberstone

Holly Humberstone

2022-06-06

Not even a city-wide tube strike could stop the sold-out crowd from reaching Holly Humberstone at the O2 Kentish Town Forum on June 6, 2022. As if the crowd didn't already know her name, the backdrop boasted a large HOLLY HUMBERSTONE amidst skulls, angular light poles, and a metal fan that scattered light throughout the set.

Opening with Vanilla, Humberstone made her way through the songs that have been so warmly embraced by her fans over the past few years. Making her debut just before the pandemic in 2020, she has only just begun to tour in the past year. This seeming lack of live experience has not slowed her down at all - she's been playing increasingly growing sold out headlines as well as opening for Olivia Rodrigo in the States.

Although she brands herself as "such an awkward girl", her timid nature is all the more endearing on stage, coming out through gentle thank yous after every song. It is not with great bravado that her songs like Overkill, Please Don't Leave Just Yet, and Thursday need - but a caring hand and emotional...

Lorde

Lorde

2022-06-01

Silhouetted with warm light inside of a large, circular drum, Lorde began her show to a sold out crowd at The Roundhouse on Wednesday, June 1. Her first three songs transported the audience backwards through her discography - from Leader of the New Regime (Solar Power) to Homemade Dynamite (Melodrama) and finally Buzzcut Season (Pure Heroine). These three songs established the expectations for the night, a blend of tracks that highlighted the best of Lorde from the age of 16 to now.

After the high energy open, she took a seat to talk with the crowd and introduce herself. "My name is Ella," she smiles, "but you may know me as Lorde". The crowd goes wild. Ella explains how much she's been looking forward to playing in London and in particular an intimate setting like The Roundhouse, where she saw Kendrick Lamar and Haim. At only 3,300 capacity, the show sold out in under two minutes, and Lorde knew, "I'm with my real ones tonight".

She then played Stoned at the Nail Salon, where the crowd yelled out "not you" to her lyric "all of the music you loved at 16 you'll grow out of". This was followed by the first outfit change of the night...

Gareth Dunlop

Gareth Dunlop

2022-05-21

Gareth Dunlop is a solo artist currently opening for Foy Vance on his current "Signs of Life" tour. I had never heard of Gareth Dunlop before but I love seeing new artists and enjoying new music. Gareth has a beautiful, soulful voice.

I would describe Gareth's sound as folk or soulful music. It's just him up there with his guitar and that is never a bad thing. Personally, it's my favorite kind of artist.

Sadly, Gareth's set was short. It was only about 5 songs. My favorite from him was definitely "Devil Like You". The only other bummer for Gareth's set was his lighting. He had a red like spot light on him, but overall it was really dark in there which I guess didn’t matter since he is solo, but still, would have been nice if the venue gave him a few extra lights or reduced the red and gave more white lighting, but that is just me.

I would definitely see Gareth again, he is very talented and...

Gracie Abrams

Gracie Abrams

2022-05-17

Welcome to the coolest pajama party ever, full of heartbreak and hope, and fans turned to friends. Gracie Abrams brought every part of herself to the stage at Islington Assembly Hall on May 17th, 2022 - the goofy spirit, love of Harry Styles, and her intimate lyrics that made her fans fall in love with her.

Taking the stage in black satin pajamas, Abrams opened with one of her most upbeat anthems, "Feels Like". She had a way of making the crowd feel known, strutting up and down the stage to make eye contact with every person she could. She would wave, lean forward and touch hands, and personally collected a multitude of gifts from her adoring crowd.

Back in her "favorite city" after playing Omera in October, Abrams played a full 17-song set. This included "Rockland" (co-written by Aaron Dessner who she gushed about onstage), "Block Me Out", crowd favorite "For Real This Time", and an acoustic cover of Harry Styles' "As It Was". Right before the set was over, Gracie took a minute to pause and acknowledge the...

The Backseat Lovers

The Backseat Lovers

2022-05-16

One of my favorite acts, The Backseat Lovers, gave an electrifying performance at London's Electric Brixton on May 16th, 2022. The last time they were here, they played a sold out show at the 300 capacity Moth Club. This time around, they packed the Electric with 1500 super fans.

I arrived just before doors to a queue clear around the block. Though the show didn't start for another hour and a half, fans ran to get to the barricade or to secure a limited edition signed poster. The audience got to see opening act Wunderhorse on their last date with the band, before the Utah natives started strong with an instrumental intro. These long interludes are common for the band's live shows and left a lot of room for moshing throughout the night.

What strikes me most each time I see the band is the intensity by which they play. Striking glares, strong rock sounds, and assured vocals permeate the experience. However, when the guys take a moment between songs, it's with massive smiles, gratitude clear on their faces. Lead singer, Josh Harmon, addressed the crowd...

Monowhales

Monowhales

2022-05-14

I have to be honest. This isn’t going to be an unbiased review. I love this band. After first hearing them in 2019 when they released RWLYD (Really Wanna Let You Down) I became and quick fan of the Monowhales. I love their sound and energy. Not only does it vibe through their music, but it translates to an extremely fun live show.

Playing a strong song set that brought the best of their music from the debut EP, 2018’s Control Freak and 2021’s follow-up EP Daytona Bleach would have been enough for any fan of their music, but to fill out this twelve song set they also included two of their latest releases that have been gaining them major national radio attention, CTRL^^^ and New Threads.

While Covid effected many groups and a lot of bands put their music on hold, Monowhales stayed active on their socials, tightened up their sound and made sure that no one would forget about them by regularly releasing new music and fun covers on Facebook. It is easy to see why their popularity continues to increase. They are just having fun doing what they are doing and you want to come along as part of their...

Mother Mother

Mother Mother

2022-05-14

Canadian Indie rockers Mother Mother brought their "The Inside Tour" to the London Music Hall in support of their 2021 release "Inside". Playing a mix of new songs along with a variety of favourites they entertained their excited fans with a 21 song set (that included two encore songs).

Opening with Inside's "Seven", the band then played the title song from their most popular ablum to date "O My Heart". My personal favourites came at the end of main set when they played Hayloft and Hayloft II back to back to close out before returning with their encore.

Mother Mother frontman, Ryan Guldemond had a great connection with the audience throughout the show, talking with them several times between songs and letting them know that everyone there is family and that this was a safe space where they can be free to be their authentic self. This was not lost on their fans who were very vocal in appreciation...

Jesse McCartney

Jesse McCartney

2022-05-14

So many people nowadays know Jesse McCartney as a voice actor, but if you grew up in the early 2000’s like I did, you know him from his music and hit song, "Beautiful soul". I am happy to say he is both still creating catchy songs and also still touring!

Recently, Jesse McCartney came to Chicago's Park West for his New Stage Tour and it was everything a fan could truly want! For starters, Jesse's stage set up was incredible and so lit up and bright. No matter where you were in the venue, you could see him clear as day!

Jesse came out singing "She's no you" which was a huge hit and the fans went nuts. It was absolute madness. During his seventh song, "Lemonade", Jesse and his guitarist sat on the steps of the stage and played an acoustical version of it which is something I love seeing at a concert, and so did rest of the crowd, because it felt more intimate. After that, Jesse went straight to the piano to play "Bleeding Love" which...

Casey Baer

Casey Baer

Casey Baer is someone to be on the watch for because this girl super talented and honestly, I feel like she is going to blow up VERY soon! Casey is currently opening up for Jesse McCartney on his "New Stage Tour". I decided to get there early and check out Casey Baer and I am so happy I did! Casey not only has an amazing vocal range but also her songs are super catchy and get stuck in your head in a good way!

Casey loves loves loves interacting with the crowd, singing with her fans and taking pictures. She definitely likes to make the most of her time on the stage! Even with her set up being super small on the stage, she made the most of it and tried interacting with everyone in the crowd which I really liked seeing!

Her touring band consisted of not just Casey, she also shared the stage with her drummer, Shep Martain, and her guitarist, Gray Trainer...

Jamie Miller

Jamie Miller

2022-05-14

Jamie Miller recently came to Chicago's Park West as direct support for Jesse McCartney for the "New Stage Tour". I have to say, Jamie is super talented! Jamie Miller has a beautiful voice that definitely gives me John Legend or Lewis Capaldi vibes. I loved it. It was so soothing!

A lot of his songs deal with love and heartbreak but they sound so beautiful when he sings them. Everyone loved them and most of the crowd was singing along with him. At one point during the show, he had a fan sing into the mic since she knew the song word for word. It was something that I loved seeing!

On top of his amazing vocals, Jamie is generally very supportive and loves his fans. He would interact with them, take selfies while on stage with them, and even let them sing into the mic with him. It's something that I feel you don’t see a whole lot anymore so it's really awesome to see...
